It is not known for certain who organised the attack.

Pro-Democracy supporters in Hong Kong were assaulted by suspected triad gangsters in an attack that left at least 45 people injured.

Hong Kong escalated into violence on Sunday as police launched tear gas at pro-democracy protesters and a group of masked assailants attacked people making their way back from the rally in a subway station.

Local media said they were targeting people dressed in black, the colour that most protesters were wearing

The masked men stormed Yuen Long MTR station at about 10.30pm local time.

At least 45 people were injured in the attacks while some protestors have claimed that police stood by while the attacks on them happened.

In a statement, the government said: “This is absolutely unacceptable to Hong Kong as a society that observes the rule of law. The SAR [Special Administrative Region] Government strongly condemns any violence and will seriously take enforcement actions.”

It is not known who organised the attack.

Civil Human Rights Front, the organiser behind Sunday’s march said: “While the police were unnecessarily teargassing protesters … on the other side in Yuen Long there were real thugs chasing and beating passersby, journalists and lawmakers. This is outrageous.”

Pro-democracy lawmaker Ray Chan tweeted: “Hong Kong has 1 of the world’s highest cop to population ratio. Where were @hkpoliceforce?”
