Australia foils “elaborate” terrorist attack, Prime Minister says

They were targeting a major airport.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Sunday that the country’s police had foiled a terrorist plot to target an Australian plane.

In a statement, Turnbull said “We face a range of terrorist threats, some of them are lone actors, who activate very quickly, with very little warning. On other occasions, you get quite elaborate conspiracies. This appears to be in that category.”

Four men were arrested in the suburbs of Sydney on suspicion of using an “improvised device” to carry out an attack on a plane flying from a major Australian airport.

The Australian federal police commissioner, Andrew Colvin, revealed that the police had been tipped off by partner agencies, and further said that “We believe it’s Islamic-inspired terrorism. Exactly what is behind this is something we need to investigate fully.”

They did not link the alleged plan with any one specific terrorist group.

Extra security measures have since been put into place at all major Australian airports, the Prime Minister said.
