This story is not for those of you with a weak stomach.

A 50-year-old woman in Australia has been taken in by authorities after a “complex investigation” into the alleged contamination of strawberries earlier this year.

Back in September, a man was admitted to hospital after he was found to have consumed needles that were contained within a strawberry.

Since then, more than 100 further incidents of such contamination involving sewing needles or sewing pins have been uncovered.

The incidents led to a deep panic in Australian society, and laws are currently being rushed through parliament to increase the possible punishments for food contamination.

A safety warning over the strawberries has been in effect since 12 September. Supermarkets had been forced to stop selling the fruit.

It was confirmed on Saturday that a woman has been arrested in connection with the contamination. If she is charged and convicted, she could face 10 years in prison.

The woman has not been publicly named by police.
