We may be over the worst of the weather but there is still plenty of snow lying around.

Members of the public, particularly climbers and hikers, have been warned to avoid uplands in Wicklow due to a risk of avalanche conditions that is set to continue well into next week.

A severe climber/hiker warning was issued on the Wicklow Weather Facebook page on Thursday evening, reiterating warnings from Mountain Rescue teams and the Gardaí to avoid uplands in Wicklow as vehicles continue to block access for plant machinery and Mountain Rescue teams.

Temperatures which have remained low all week will increase notably this weekend, increasing the thawing process but also leading to problematic conditions in the hills and mountains in Wicklow.

Extremely deep snow drifts remain in areas above 400 metres, while with temperatures rising, rivers and mountain streams will also pose a danger over the weekend with a risk of flooding downstream and downriver.

Coillte have also advised the public that many of their car parks and recreation areas are closed as they are inaccessible due to snow and are likely to remain closed for some time.

Met Éireann have forecast plenty of rain over what will be a considerably milder weekend than the conditions we’ve experienced of late, with temperatures set to reach highs of 12 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.
