Ballycotton RNLI rescued four people from a fishing vessel that was taking on water off the coast of Co Cork on Friday afternoon, in a multi-agency operation that also left one crew member injured.
Just after 4pm, the volunteer crew launched its all-weather Trent-class lifeboat, The Austin Lidbury, after Valentia Coast Guard relayed an urgent call for help from the 14-metre vessel around 5km south of Ballycotton Island, RTÉ News reported. The Irish Coast Guard's Rescue 115 helicopter was also dispatched and remained on standby.
Lifeboat Operations Manager Andy Brown praised the crew members 'who made themselves available and acted quickly to prevent this critical incident from deteriorating further'.

Deputy coxswain Eolan Breathnach brought the lifeboat alongside, and volunteer crew member Mike Kenneally boarded the fishing boat with emergency salvage pumping equipment, going below deck to tackle the flooding. Working with the vessel's own bilge pumps, the salvage pump brought water levels back to a manageable level and the boat was escorted back to Ballycotton harbour under its own power. During the transfer of the pump one of the crew slipped and was injured, and an ambulance met the vessel when it returned to Ballycotton Harbour at 5.25pm, The Journal reported.
