Scary stuff.

A beach in Mallorca had to be evacuated after a ten-foot shark swam into the shallows. After the water was evacuated, hundreds of panicked people stood on the shoreline of Cala Domingos as the authorities dealt with the situation.

The shark was first spotted on Saturday as it swam close to the beaches at Cala Major and Can Pastilla.

As you can see in the footage below, the blue shark was swimming just a few metres away from the beach with plenty of people in the water.

Blue sharks, which feed primarily on small fish and squid, are common in the Mediterranean but normally live in deep, cooler waters and do not come this close to the shore.

After the sea was evacuated, police, lifeguards and biologists from a nearby aquarium tried to guide the shark back out to sea.

However, the shark appeared to be disorientated and was ultimately dragged up onto the beach over “fears for its life”, lifeguards said.

Local paper, the Diario de Mallorca, said that the shark had been found with a serious head wound, apparently caused by a harpoon. It’s unknown if this was an injury that the shark suffered prior to the moment it swam into the shallows.

The shark died shortly after it was taken out of the water.

Nobody is believed to have been injured.
