Don't be caught out.

A warning has been issued.

The public have been asked to be wary of a email and text message scam which is circulating in Ireland.

People have been receiving emails concerning a tax refund claiming to be from the Revenue and asking for credit and debit card information.

This week, the Office of the Revenue Commissioners were made aware of fraudulent emails and SMS (text messages) purporting to come from Revenue seeking personal information from taxpayers in connection with a tax refund or seeking credit/debit card details.

The Revenue have warned that these messages did not come from them and they’re a scam seeking to steal your personal information.

They’ve said they never send emails or text messages requiring customers to send personal information via email, text or pop-up windows.

It’s recommended that if you receive one of these messages that you suspect is fraudulent or a scam, the best course of action is to delete it. If you’re actually waiting for a tax refund, you should contact your local tax office to check its status.

“Anyone who provided personal information in response to these fraudulent emails or text messages should contact their bank or credit card company immediately,” the Revenue said.
