Bill on abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities defeated by Dáil vote

Mick Wallace’s bill on abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality has been defeated in a Dáil vote.

The bill was rejected by 95 TDs compared to 45 TDs who supported it.

A number of Independent TDs within the government voted in favour of the bill including Minster for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross and junior ministers Finian McGrath and John Halligan.

Fianna Fáil had been granted a free vote, but only five of 43 TDs voted in favour of Mick Wallace’s bill.

They were: Robert Troy, Timmy Dooley, Niall Collins, Lisa Chambers and Fiona O’laughlin.

The legislation had proposed permitting abortions when babies were not expected to survive but had been called unconstitutional by the the Attorney General.
