A teenage boy was also rescued and is receiving treatment in hospital in Letterkenny.

The bodies of a father and son were recovered from Lough Keel in Donegal on Thursday evening following a search operation after an incident at the lake earlier in the afternoon.

The bodies of a man in his 40s and his teenage son were recovered from the lake on Thursday following a search operation involving members of An Garda Síochána, the Rescue 118 helicopter, the Mulroy Coastguard and the Sheephaven Sub-Aqua Unit.

Another teenage boy, also a member of the same family, was rescued and taken to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

The search operation began shortly after 3pm on Thursday. It is believed that one member of the family fell into the water and one of the party went into help him while the third remained on land.

It is understood the family, who are not believed to be from Ireland and have a holiday home in the area, were on a fishing trip on Lough Keel between Kilmacrennan and Golan.

Post-mortems on the deceased are expected to take place at Letterkenny University Hospital on Friday.
