Police have said investigations are ongoing.

The bodies of five children have been discovered in a flat in western Germany, police have said.

Emergency services were called to the residential block in the Hasseldelle area of Solingen on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the bodies of five children were found in the apartment, after their grandmother alerted authorities.

The children were three girls aged 18 months, two and three years, as well as two boys aged six and eight, a police spokesman told German media.

A sixth child, an 11-year-old boy, is being looked after by family members.

The mother has been identified as a suspect.

She is currently in a serious condition in hospital after she was struck by a train in Düsseldorf.

Police have said investigations are ongoing.
