Irish rugby fan allegedly raped in Bordeaux after Romania match

Gardaí are liaising with local authorities on the alleged incident.

French police are investigating an incident where an Irish rugby fan was allegedly abducted and raped in the early hours of Monday morning while attending the Rugby World Cup in Bordeaux.

Local media have reported that the incident happened overnight. French authorities are said to be searching for three men in connection to the attack.

According to French outlet Le Parisien, the incident happened shortly after midnight, when a 37-year-old woman was walking on Rue Rouselle in the Saint-Pierre district, near her accommodation.

Le Parisien reported that “three individuals seized her and took her to Rue du Puits Descazaux”, where she was allegedly raped.

The woman was then found in the street by “a group of Welsh supporters.” She was then taken to a hospital in Bordeaux and has been referred to a victim support association.

Members of An Garda Síochána are on the ground in Bordeaux and are liaising with French police in relation to the alleged incident.

In a statement to JOE, a Garda spokesperson said:

“Members of An Garda Síochána currently deployed in France for the duration of the Rugby World Cup tournament to assist Irish people visiting France are liaising with local authorities in relation to an alleged incident.

“The investigation is a matter for French police.

An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time.”
