They were shot outside a National Police office

The brother of an Irish sports star has been shot dead in Barcelona.

As per reports from the Irish Times, a 36-year-old man, originally from Dublin's norther inner city, was killed in the Spanish city on Wednesday, 10 June at around 10am

It is understood that he was shot on Carrer de Balmes, one of the largest and most well known avenues in the city.

A man hunt is underway for the perpetrator with investigators saying they have found the suspected murder weapon near the scene at a bus stop.

They have also released CCTV images of the suspect.

The victim is reported to have been shot in the head just outside a National Police ID and passport office, according to local news outlet ElCaso.cat.

The incident is being treated as a targeted assassination linked to organised crime, as per police.

Despite the city currently being under tight security measures as Pope Leo XIV visits the city, authorities confirmed that the murder is unrelated.

A Dublin resident who lives near to the victim's parents said that they are “highly respected in the area. They really are lovely people as is his older brother who did his country proud in the sport which made him so well known.

“Word is spreading fast around the local community as to who the Irish man who died is.”

The victim is yet to be officially identified.
