Cabinet set to sign-off on expanded €2.7 billion Mica redress scheme

Under the proposal, the scheme would be expanded to include Clare and Limerick.

Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien will bring a proposal to extend the Government’s mica redress scheme to Cabinet on Tuesday (14 June), according to reports.

Multiple outlets state that the revisions to the scheme, which are for homeowners whose properties are crumbling due to the use of defective concrete blocks, would see it expanded to include counties Clare and Limerick.

While the Government said last November that the scheme would cost a total of €2.2 billion, the addition of the new counties is expected to increase costs to €2.7 billion, though this figure reportedly could rise further.

An estimated 7,500 homes are said to have been affected by mica, with many in Donegal and Mayo.

The Cabinet had previously agreed that the redress scheme would see grants capped at €420,000 per home.

Homeowners affected will be entitled to €145 per square foot on the first 1,000 feet of their property, with the figure then falling to €110 per square foot for the next 1,000.

A sliding scale will then apply to all square footage after that.

However, Mica action group representatives and TDs in affected areas have criticised the Government for the implementation of a sliding scale as part of the scheme.
