Caitríona Perry reveals she is leaving RTÉ after 16 years

“I will soon be leaving RTÉ.”

Caitríona Perry has announced she is leaving RTÉ after 16 years. The broadcaster confirmed the news in an emotional statement this afternoon.

Alongside a photo of her taken in the RTÉ studio, Caitríona Perry confirmed the sad news. She revealed she will be working with the BBC after she wraps up in RTÉ. She stated:

“It is with a mix of sadness and excitement that I wish to share that I will soon be leaving RTE. Although the time has zipped by, I have worked here for almost 16 years. It is really hard to say goodbye. I have made great friends, worked with some incredibly talented people, and had fantastic experiences and opportunities.”

Caitríona reflected on her time in RTÉ and spoke out about her career highlights including the time she worked as a Washington Correspondent, as well as Presenter of the SixOne News. The news presenter confirmed she will be finishing up in RTÉ in the coming weeks.

She will be moving to the BBC.

“I’m pleased to say that I will be joining the BBC in a new international role, as BBC News Chief Presenter, based in Washington DC. I’ll start that role at the end of the summer and in the meantime my family and I will be packing up to move back to Washington DC to begin another chapter, picking up where we left off in 2018.”

Caitríona said working for the BBC will be an incredible opportunity for her. She said she cannot wait to bring news to a global audience of nearly 500 million people. She thanked the RTÉ viewers who “afforded me the extraordinary privilege of being a public service broadcast journalist”.

Caitríona said working for RTÉ has been an honour: “Thank you also to all of those who have trusted me to tell their stories. As journalists, we rely on your bravery to stand up and speak out.”
