Californian scientists have discovered the origin of the Irish potato famine

Well it’s about time.

JOE.ie wasn’t around in the mid-19th century but if we had been, the chances are you would have seen far fewer stories about Conor McGregor and far more stories about the potato famine.

Well, thanks to scientists from UC Berkeley, we finally know where the blighter that caused the blight came from.

Before now, researchers had narrowed it down to Mexico or South America, but the results are finally in and it turns out South American pathogens are to blame.

Michael Martin, the lead author of the study has said “pinpointing the pathogen’s geographic origins could help scientists find potatoes in the region with genes that give them natural resistance to the pathogen”, according to The Daily Californian.

Well, it’s a bit late for that, isn’t it Michael?
