To commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death on October 9, 1967, An Post have issued a €1 stamp featuring an iconic image of Che Guevara, a leading figure in the Cuban Revolution of the 1950s and 1960s.

Born in Argentina, Guevara helped Fidel Castro overthrow the US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista and as well as being involved in revolutions in Cuba and further afield, he was also a renowned physician, author and diplomat.

Executed in 1967, a famous photograph taken of Guevara in 1960 remains one of the most iconic individual photographs of all-time, thanks in no small part to a two-tone portrait based on the photo, created by Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick, which remains prevalent in popular culture today.

An image of Guevara based on Fitzpatrick’s work will adorn a €1 stamp issued by An Post on Thursday as part of their 2017 Stamp Programme, which has included stamps commemorating the Women’s Rugby World Cup, the Ploughing Championships and the late former Taoiseach Jack Lynch amongst other symbols, individuals and events this year.

The stamps are available to buy – from a minimum of two to a maximum of 5,000 per order – from irishstamps.ie.
