Cigarettes could be set for a price hike next month

This could be bad news you're a smoker

Alan Loughnane

A price increase for tobacco in next month’s budget cannot be ruled out according to Finance Minister Michael Noonan…

The budget is coming up next month and has the Irish public nervously looking at what could be on the cards for them over the next year.

Well it seems there could be bad news for the smokers of the Irish population as Michael Noonan has indicated that the government can’t rule out raising the duties on tobacco.

Minister Noonan told the Irish Independent that: “We may raise some taxes, obviously on health grounds. There’s always an interest in raising duty on tobacco. We won’t rule it out completely.”

Cigarettes also increased in price by 40c last year making a 20 pack a nice even tenner, so you won’t have those two 20 cent coins rolling about making noise in your pocket.

However, the Finance Minster was keen to point out that the Government would not be increasing taxes on workers and there would be a particular emphasis on cutting the taxes on the self-employed during next month’s budget.

Budget 2016 will be announced in full on October 13…
