Community rallies to clear snow for neighbour’s funeral

The community worked hard to make sure the funeral could go ahead.

A rural community has rallied around a bereaved family in the freezing cold weather to shovel snow and clear paths to ensure their neighbour’s funeral could take place.

Locals in Clonoulty, Tipperary came together on Sunday morning to shovel snow in and around the village to make sure the funeral of Bridie Hammersley, a former Fianna Fáil councillor, went ahead as planned.

Tractors and trailers were also brought in to shift snow drifts that were blocking the path to her final resting place.

The former councillor’s grandson, Timmy Hammersley told RTÉ that ‘community spirit was alive and well’ as he thanked everyone for their help.

He said: “At 8.30 am this morning there was no way Bridie’s funeral could safely go ahead, but by 10.30 am Clonoulty was nearly the safest place in Munster to bury someone. There were maybe eight tractors clearing snow, clearing roads, clearing the church, and then numerous people out with a shovel.

“She was a woman who never caused any bother really, never caused any hassle herself but the weather definitely caused hassle for her in her last days.”

It comes after the temperature plummeted across the country and warnings were put in place for snow and ice which has caused widespread disruption.

Friends and neighbours paid tribute to the late Ms Hammersley on RIP.ie.

One said: “I have fond memories of Mrs Hammersley from my childhood, great fun working in the shop with Carol.

“I remember being struck by how stylish and gentle Mrs Hammersley was, an impression that stayed with me over the years. May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace.”

Another added: “Our deepest sympathy to you, Hammersley family, Butler, extended families and many friends.

“You are in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

“Bridie a lovely lady, always a pleasure to meet, may you now rest in heavenly peace, reunited with Timmie and all your loved ones.”
