The infamous ‘Black Widow’ was at the centre of one of Ireland’s most notorious murder cases.

Convicted murderer Catherine Nevin has died at the age of 67 at a care facility in Dublin on Monday evening, having been previously diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Nevin was found guilty in April 2000 of the murder of her husband Tom at their pub in County Wicklow.

Tom Nevin was killed during a staged robbery at Jack Whites Inn on 19 March 1996.

Catherine Nevin had previously approached three men about killing her husband, before finally finding someone to carry out the killing.

She received a life sentence following five days of deliberations to conclude a trial that dominated the Irish media.

Famously dubbed the ‘Black Widow’, Nevin was found unanimously guilty on the charge of soliciting others to murder her husband, as well as receiving majority verdicts of 11 to one on the other two charges of soliciting.

Though Nevin would appeal the verdict, the Court of Criminal Appeal dismissed a final attempt to have her conviction declared a miscarriage of justice in 2010.
