Man (20s) charged following daylight stabbing outside Cork city centre cafe

A man involved in the incident has been discharged from hospital.

A man in his 20s has been charged and appeared before a special sitting of Cork City District Court in relation to a suspected stabbing in Cork city on Friday, September 6.

The incident occurred shortly after 5pm outside of a cafe in the centre of the city, at the junction of Grand Parade and Oliver Plunkett Street.

According to reports, the alarm was raised after the injured man entered the cafe premises where staff and customers rushed to his aid.

He was treated at the scene before being transported to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries.

It is believed that the man has since been discharged from hospital.

In a statement to JOE on Saturday, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the serious assault of a man in Cork City on Friday, 6th September 2024.

“Shortly after 5pm, Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at the junction of Grand Parade and Oliver Plunkett Street.

“A male in his late 30s was found at the scene with serious injuries.

“He received medical treatment at the scene and was then transported to Cork University Hospital. His injuries are understood to be serious but not life-threatening.

“A technical and forensic examination of the scene has been completed, and investigations are ongoing.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this assault to come forward.

“They are also appealing to road users and pedestrians who may have camera footage (including dash cams) from the Grand Parade/Oliver Plunkett Street area between 4:30pm and 5:30pm to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station at 021 452 2000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
