89 further Covid-19 cases, one new death

The latest Covid figures have been released.

89 further cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed, while sadly one new death has also been reported.

There has now been a total of 29,114 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland since the beginning of the outbreak in February.

The death that was reported today occurred in June, and it has been approximately two weeks since someone has died with the virus in the Republic of Ireland.

Of Wednesday’ss 89 cases, 53 are in Dublin, 15 in Limerick, while the remaining 21 are spread across Clare, Cork, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.

Dublin, Carlow, Limerick, Tipperary and Clare are showing a higher level of cases of the virus than other counties.

Eight of today’s cases have been identified as community transmission.

Wednesday evening’s briefing also revealed that eight people have been admitted to hospital with confirmed Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. 

The R number is now estimated to be just above 1, perhaps as high as 1.2.

At the moment, there are 40 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in hospitals in the Republic of Ireland, while six people with the virus are currently in ICU.

Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer said: “Every single contribution and effort you make counts to the national push to curb the effects of this infectious virus on our society.

“Every time you take responsibility to keep your social contacts low, avoid a crowded place or get-together, know that you are making a vital difference. It is individual action built upon individual action that will get us through this pandemic.”

Meanwhile, there was two further Covid-related deaths, as well as 71 new cases, reported in Northern Ireland on Wednesday.
