Ireland is expecting up to three inches of snow in most counties over Saturday and Sunday.
On Friday morning, Met Éireann issued a status orange snow and ice warning for 17 counties across the country, meaning that many of us will be driving in the ice and snow over the course of the weekend.
The Road Safety Authority has enlisted famed weather-warner Teresa Mannion to advise drivers how to remain safe on the roads despite treacherous conditions.
In a short video, Mannion advises:
- Use dipped headlights.
- Slow down and leave extra space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front.
- Use the highest gear possible but at a reduced speed.
- Use a low gear when travelling downhill.
- When slowing down, tap brakes lightly to alert those travelling behind.
- Scan the road ahead at all times and ask yourself if you can stop safely at any time, if you can see properly and if you are clearly visible to others.
The RSA also advises that motorists favour major roads over the snowy weekend, as they are “more likely to be gritted.”
An orange weather warning has been issued for falls of snow for Connaught, CN, MN, DL, D, KE, LS, LD, LH, WW, OY, WH and MH from 11pm on Saturday until 11pm on Sunday. Accumulations of 4 to 8cm are expected and greater totals possible. Paths will be slippery & roads, treacherous. pic.twitter.com/OAS4KqZ3H4
