Sounds like winter is coming.
A number of pleasant days last week and at the weekend may have duped us all into thinking we were experiencing an Indian summer of sorts.
The forecast for the coming days, however, sounds a lot more wild and wintry, with temperatures set to drop sharply in the evenings and Met Éireann also flagging the arrival of “gusty cyclonic variable winds”.
After a mixed bag of a day on Wednesday, with scattered showers and occasional sunny spells, the rain is expected to become heavy on Wednesday evening, with some heavy thundery bursts at times and temperatures dropping to as low as 3 degrees.
Heavy bursts of rain are promised again on Thursday, along with the aforementioned cyclonic winds and strong to gale force northwesterly winds affecting Munster in particular.
Friday will be cool and breezy, with some sunny spells and temperatures reaching as high as 13 degrees during the day before dropping to as low as 2 degrees at night.
In more positive news, it appears as if the best conditions will be saved for Saturday and Sunday, with mainly dry conditions and temperatures in the mid-teens, with light showers expected to be confined to the southeast of the country on Sunday morning.
Saturday night is forecast to be pretty chilly, however, with grass frost and temperatures expected to drop to just above freezing.
Milder conditions will prevail on Sunday and into early next week, with the early forecast predicting more changeable and unsettled weather for the foreseeable future.
