Daft.ie listing for one-bedroom house costing €1.35m slammed as ‘absolutely insane’

Stephen Porzio

‘Probably the most expensive house I’ve ever seen in Ireland’.

A new Daft.ie house listing has sparked a backlash online, with the Cork 70m2, one-bedroom property currently on sale for €1,350,000.

The address of the house is 3 Father McSweeney Terrace, Ardbrack in Kinsale. Estate agents Bowe Property say that the one-bedroom is located in one of the town’s “most sought-after private locations”.

This is at the “confluence of Scilly and Ardbrack overlooking the natural beauty of Kinsale Harbour, its forts, waterway and coastline”.

Bowe Property add:

“This original property has been tastefully and stylishly renovated with significant emphasis on capturing the beauty and the view that is offered from every aspect of the extensive gardens and three tier outer decks flowing from the impressive kitchen/living area allowing one to cocoon within the closed environment on winter days and blend the outer decks to the best of al fresco living on brighter warmer days.

“A beautiful bespoke bathroom on the first floor adjoins a master suite with dual aspect and framed windows to the rear overlooking the gardens and Kinsale Harbour and its moving waterways and pleasure marine traffic that is quite simply perfect and naturally hypnotic.”

It also states: “Properties in such a location are very rare offerings and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a property in one of Kinsale’s most special and loved locations.”

However, it’s the high price tag on the house in comparison to its small size that has led to the listing being featured on Ciarán Mulqueen’s Crazy House Prices.

The popular page seeks to highlight the rise in the cost of houses in Ireland.

In a clip posted to Instagram, Mulqueen said of the Kinsale property: “Another absolutely insane house price here for you… It is €1.35 million for a 70 square metre one-bedroom house.

“That means it’s nearly €20,000 per square metre, which I think makes it probably the most expensive house I’ve ever seen in Ireland.

“This could be one of the most expensive houses in the world. I’m not sure.

“I also think it’s an ex-council house, which is a bit mind-blowing to me, but anyway, there you go.”

In the capion on the video, he added: “Nice views and a big garden, but at nearly €20,000/sqm this is absolutely insane money for such a small house.”

Commenting on Mulqueen’s post, one person joked: “Is the ocean behind it included in that price?”

Another added: “We need to start protesting. This is ridiculous.”
