The alleged crime boss returned to Ireland after a decade abroad, having been extradited from the United Arab Emirates, and appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin on Sunday evening.

Kinahan, who was flown home on a Government jet, appeared for around 15 minutes without legal representation, claiming he had not had time to put a legal team in place in Ireland.

His case comes after Joe previously reported he was set to face trial in Ireland once his final appeal failed, and had returned to Ireland to answer the charge.

Irish Times Crime and Security Editor Conor Lally, speaking on Newstalk's The Claire Byrne Show, said there was a "quite a large security operation" for the hearing, involving armed Gardaí from specialist units and officers from the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

"He spoke quite a bit," Lally said, an observation he described as unusual for a defendant appearing before the non-jury Special Criminal Court, as Newstalk reported.

At Portlaoise, a landing that usually houses eight inmates has been cleared for his detention, with gym facilities and a library available, though he is expected to be locked in his cell for up to 20 hours a day.

Kinahan is due back before the court on 5 October, with a trial not expected until the spring of next year at the earliest.
