Daniel Kinahan To Be Segregated At Portlaoise Prison After Court Appearance

Irish Times Crime and Security Editor Conor Lally, speaking on Newstalk's The Claire Byrne Show, said there was a "quite a large security operation" for the hearing, involving armed Gardaí from specialist units and officers from the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

"He spoke quite a bit," Lally said, an observation he described as unusual for a defendant appearing before the non-jury Special Criminal Court, as Newstalk reported.

At Portlaoise, a landing that usually houses eight inmates has been cleared for his detention, with gym facilities and a library available, though he is expected to be locked in his cell for up to 20 hours a day. Kinahan is due back before the court on 5 October, with a trial not expected until the spring of next year at the earliest.
