Dave Chappelle attack

The incident took place on Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

A man has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon after he attacked Dave Chappelle on stage in Los Angeles.

The comedian was performing at the Hollywood Bowl as part of the Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival on Tuesday evening (3 May) when he was tackled to the ground by a man.

After the incident, the Los Angeles Police Department told local media that a man with a gun and knife on him had been taken into custody.

According to authorities, the man was armed with a replica weapon “that can eject a knife blade” if discharged correctly.

The LAPD has now confirmed that a 23-year-old man, named as Isaiah Lee, has been charged following the incident.

When the man got on stage and charged at Chappelle, he was quickly rushed by security and some of the comedian’s friends, including Jamie Foxx.

Chappelle eventually returned to the stage and joked: “It was a trans man”.

The comedian has attracted criticism in recent months for his latest Netflix special, The Closer, in which he jokes about the trans community and states that ‘gender is a fact.’

Foxx also returned to the stage alongside Chappelle and voiced his admiration for the comic.

He told the crowd: “Listen, I just want to say I’ve had an incredible time. This guy is a genius, we’ve got to protect him at all times, man. This is what it’s about.

“For every comedian that comes out here, this means everything. You’re a genius, you’re a legend, I enjoyed myself thoroughly and we’re not gonna let nothing happen to you.”

Chappelle added: “I’ve been doing this 35 years, I just stomped a n***a backstage. Always wanted to do that.”

Chris Rock, meanwhile, got a Will Smith-themed quip in for good measure.
