There has been a “a bank payments issue”.

The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection have confirmed that a bank payment issue has affected some of the scheduled payments for social welfare recipients on Tuesday morning.

The problem is in relation to a system-wide banking issue but the Department has said that it processed all its payments as usual.

“The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection is aware that a bank payments issue is affecting European payments today,” the statement read.

“This is affecting some social welfare payments due to be paid into customer bank accounts this morning.”

The statement adds: “The Department can confirm that it has processed all its payments as usual. Officials from the Department have been in contact with the main banks this morning and we understand that they are working to resolve this widespread payments issue as quickly as possible. The Department will continue to monitor the situation and will update customers throughout the day on our website and via social media.”

AIB acknowledged and apologised for this delay while stating that “no customers will be adversely impacted”.

Ulster Bank released their own statement on the issue, saying: “We are aware there is an Industry wide Payments issue that has delayed some credits being applied to ROI Bank customer accounts. Investigations are ongoing to be able to apply these credits to customers accounts as soon as possible.”

Permanent TSB said that “due to a European payments delay, payment transactions between banks have not been received this morning. This means that any payment due to transfer to your account from another bank this morning has been delayed”.

“Due to this European payments delay, there are a number of banks experiencing this issue this morning,” the statement continued.

“We are monitoring the situation and payments will be processed as soon as received. We will continue to keep you updated and we wish to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
