Dirty airfryers are causing fire accidents in Ireland

7% of users admitted they only clean it around once a month.

Cleaning the appliance regularly was the main advice following their product safety investigation.

The investigation came after rising consumer complaints and the recall of 60,000 air fryers last year.

Fortunately, the investigation found no significant safety concerns with the air fryers tested. However, the watchdog is warning that even the safest of appliances can become dangerous if they are used incorrectly or not properly maintained.

The CCPC's research found that over 40% of air fryer owners use it daily. Despite this, cleaning habits were not found to be as regular.

Less than half (44%) of daily users said they clean it after every use, while 7% admitted they only clean it around once a month.

Director of Communications at the CCPC, Gráinne Griffin, urged consumers that product safety depends just as much on how appliances are used as how they are manufactured.

She continued: "But compliant products can still be dangerous if used incorrectly. Nearly three-quarters of kitchens in Ireland now have an air fryer and we do hear from consumers whose air fryers overheat or go on fire, so it is important to take steps to mitigate this risk."

The CCPC is reminding consumers to follow the manufacturer's instructions, clean their air fryer after each use and always use it in a well-ventilated area.

Ray Hamill, Assistant Fire Adviser with the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management, further stressed the importance of safe use.

"Proper use, correct maintenance and proper ventilation can all significantly reduce the risk of fire," he said.

"The single most important measure every home can take is to install and maintain working smoke alarms, as they provide the earliest warning of a fire and remain the best way to protect lives in the home. In the event of a fire, get out, stay out and call 112 or 999."
