US President Donald Trump has been accused of racism for telling a group of Democratic congresswomen to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

“So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe… viciously telling the people of the United States… how our government is to be run,” Trump tweeted on Sunday.

He then said they should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

He did not mention any names in the tweets but many believe they were directed towards a group of four congresswomen of colour; three were born and raised in the US, while the fourth moved to the US as a child.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley and Ilhan Omar have all called the president racist, and have been backed by members of the Democratic Party.

Tlaib, congresswoman for Michigan’s 13th district, tweeted calling for Mr Trump’s impeachment.

“Want a response to a lawless and complete failure of a president? He is the crisis. His dangerous ideology is the crisis. He needs to be impeached,” she wrote.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted at Mr Trump: “On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you cannot accept that we don’t fear you either.”

The US president shrugged off sharp criticism over the tweets and tweeted later on Sunday that the “many terrible things they say about the United States” must not go unchallenged.

In a tweet on Sunday night, he wrote: “So sad to see the Democrats sticking up for people who speak so badly of our country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion.

“Whenever confronted, they call their adversaries, including Nancy Pelosi, ‘RACIST’.

“Their disgusting language and the many terrible things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged.

“If the Democrat Party wants to continue to condone such disgraceful behavior, then we look even more forward to seeing you at the ballot box in 2020!”
