US President Donald Trump has given his backing to Boris Johnson saying that the former Mayor of London would make an “excellent” Prime Minister.

President Trump was speaking ahead of the start of a state visit to Britain on Monday, during which he will meet with outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May.

Speaking to The Sun, Trump said: “I think Boris would do a very good job. I think he would be excellent.”

The president added: “I like him. I have always liked him. I don’t know that he is going to be chosen, but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person.

“He has been very positive about me and our country.”

Trump also said other candidates have approached him in a bid to secure his endorsement.

He said: “Other people have asked me for an endorsement too. I have been asked for endorsements”.

In a report from Buzzfeed on Saturday about what other states think of Boris Johnson, it was revealed that in January 2017, the then US secretary of state John Kerry took a short farewell tour to say goodbye to some of America’s closest allies. As part of it, he visited the UK and attended a dinner hosted by Boris Johnson.

According to the report: “Before the meal, the British foreign secretary gifted Kerry a small box. In it, to the surprise of both diplomatic parties, was a “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” Trump campaign cap.”

While the gift was intended as a joke by Johnson, Buzzfeed said everyone else in the room found it “disrespectful to Kerry and his colleagues after a painful and divisive US election.”

Meanwhile, Trump also had comments for Meghan Markle and referred to the American-born Duchess of Sussex as “nasty” over comments she made in 2016. She threatened to move to Canada if Trump won the presidency.

“I didn’t know that she was nasty,” he said when told about her criticism.
