Nobody does false claims better than Donald Trump…

In the midst of Storm Ophelia, you may have missed Donald Trump making a false claim about Ireland.

On Monday evening, Trump revealed that Ireland is going to be reducing it’s corporate tax from 12% down to 8%.

“You look at other countries and what they’ve done, and we’re competing with other countries,” he said. “When China is at 15% and I hear that Ireland is going to be reducing their corporate rates down to 8% from 12%.

“You have other countries also reducing. We can’t be at 35% and think we’re going to remain competitive in terms of companies and jobs.”

Firstly, Ireland’s corporate tax rate is 12.5%, so that’s the first mistake. Secondly, the Irish budget was only last week and Minister for Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe said that the rate wasn’t going to change.

According to the Irish Times, Michael D’Arcy, Minister for State at the Department of Finance said in New York on Tuesday that the government had no plans to change the rate of corporate tax.

Trump has come under fire in the last week following his claim that Barack Obama and other presidents did not routinely call the families of servicemen and women killed in battle, a statement which has been heavily refuted.
