The Donegal postman’s predictions for summer 2021 are in – and it’s good news

Please.

The weather has been officially crap recently. And although this here day is providing a much needed respite from the wind and the rain, chances are that the rolling grey clouds are going to be back dominating our skies very soon.

With the summer months edging ever closer, it’s safe to say that a lot of people are hoping desperately for a heat wave or two across June, July, and August – and if the Donegal postman’s predictions are anything to go by, we may be getting just that.

Michael Gallagher, who has been predicting the weather using traditional methods for years and has developed somewhat of a cult following for his predictions, has said that despite the bad weather over the past few months, summer looks set to be quite warm indeed.

He told RSVP: “In bygone days, people had ways of predicting the weather that were handed down to them from their ancestors,” he said. “Over the last couple of months, we’ve had a bad spring. Very cold, hailstones and thunder. It was almost like winter.

“The old people always said that if you get a very bad spring, it was always a sign of a great outlook for the summer. And by summer I mean June, July and August – that was always how we defined summer. People think if we have a good week of weather in May, that’s our summer!”

Please god, now. Michael, who worked for An Post for the guts of 50 years, is best known for his often accurate weather predictions, particularly around Christmastime.

During his time as a postman, Micheal began predicting the weather by observing nature. In 2018, he predicted Ireland’s Big Freeze, and that same year he predicted the heatwave Ireland enjoyed that summer.

Last year, Michael predicted that Ireland would see snow close to Christmastime, and even though it didn’t end up being a totally white Christmas, it did kind of end up being a white March, April, and May… due to all the hail.
