Partygate: 20 fines to be issued by police over Downing Street parties

Ava Evans

Boris Johnson will not be among the first to be fined.

UK police have recommended 20 fines should be handed out over the infamous Downing Street parties that breached the Covid lockdown.

The fixed penalty notices (FPNs) will be handed out mostly to civil servants – with more expected to follow.

It’s understood that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not be among the first batch of fixed penalty notices issued.

Following an internal report conducted by civil servant Sue Gray, the Metropolitan Police opened an investigation into parties said to have taken place on the Downing Street estate while Britain was under Covid restrictions.

Of the 12 parties being investigated, Johnson is thought to have been present at six of them.

The more egregious flouting of lockdown rules is not expected to be dealt with in the first wave of fines, meaning the Prime Minister is unlikely to be among them.

As recently as December, Johnson had denied that he or his staff had broken lockdown guidance on the Downing Street estate.
