Dozens of children given drain cleaner instead of dental fluid in Clare this week

Carl Kinsella

An investigation is underway after more than 40 primary school-aged children were given dental solution mixed with drain cleaning fluid.

According to the Irish Independent, the children reported a burning sensation in their mouths, and some suffered blistering and upset stomachs. The incident occurred in a HSE dental clinic in Bindon Street, Ennis, Co Clare, on October 4th and 5th.

Of the 43 children, two were brought to the Accident and Emergency department of University Hospital Limerick but neither had to be admitted. The report also notes that most children did not suffer any effects after coming into contact with the drain cleaner.

The drain cleaner was heavily diluted, as it was added to water instead of the normal dental solution.

HSE Mid West chief officer Bernard Gloster has described the mishap as “regrettable and unfortunate” and confirmed that there will be a full review to establish how and why this happened.
