An extremely worrying figure.

A total of 163 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant in the space of just one week, according to An Garda Síochána.

From 27 May until 2 June, 163 persons were arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence.

A new campaign was launched by Gardaí at the beginning of 2019, in an attempt to cut down the amount of drink driving on Irish roads.

Statistics showed that 6% of all driving under the influence (DUI) arrests made in 2018 had taken place between 7am and 11am.

Before Christmas, further research showed that one in eight motorists admitted to driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit in the past two years.

Speaking about the findings, Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs, said: “Drink-driving has long been a scourge on Irish society and while such behaviour has become reprehensible in the eyes of most of us, there is still a significant minority who are selfishly willing to risk the safety of other road users rather than behaving responsibly.”
