The man is the latest victim of Storm Isha.

A man in his 60s has died after a tree fell onto his vehicle during Storm Isha.

The victim was the driver of a Vauxhall Vivaro which was involved in a collision with a fallen tree and another vehicle shortly before 10pm yesterday evening.

The incident took place on the Broad Road in Derry.

The driver of the other van involved had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

The road remained closed this morning.

Speaking to Belfast Live, SDLP councillor Ashleen Schenning explained: “To find out today that this has resulted in a loss of life is just devastating. Everyone is in shock.

“Our message that we want to get out to the community is that where there are any hazards, please let us know so that we can get them cleaned up.

“We are absolutely shocked and devastated that there has been loss of life due to a storm.”

MLA Claire Sudgen also expressed her shock at the news, saying: “This is simply tragic news – knowing that a loved-one will not be returning from their journey.”

Ms Sugden said. “I want to send my deepest condolences to the family of the man concerned. They will be devastated by this news and the shock and grief will no doubt be immense today and in the days, weeks and months that follow.

“The weather was unusually fierce last night, with winds up to around 80mph and some gusts even higher. Many trees fell across this area as a result – with some, as we have seen with heart-breaking results, falling on our roads.

“I would urge all local drivers to remain vigilant as the winds continue tonight and tomorrow. One tragedy is already one too many.”

Officers from the PSNI Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who spotted the vehicles on the Broad Road prior to the crash, to please get in touch.

They are especially keen to hear from anyone who captured dash-cam or any other footage. The number to call in 101, quoting reference 1908 21/01/24.
