A blow for smokers.
Drivers who smoke while children are in the car will face penalties starting on January 1, 2016.
The amount of the fine has not yet been decided upon, but according to The Irish Times, it is expected to be around €80.
The fine has been introduced on the back of research that shows children are more susceptible than adults to the dangers of second-hand smoke.
It is also important to note that the new rule does not solely affect the driver of the car. Any adult smoking in a car while children are present will be eligible to face the fine.
Some smoking related auto-tragedies, however, simply cannot be prevented.
