Curracloe fire

This is the kind of devastation a dune fire can cause.

Irish firefighters spent much of the weekend fighting a major blaze on Curracloe Beach in County Wexford.

The beach was evacuated and a warning was issued for people to stay away from Curracloe Strand.

The fire has since been dealt with, but drone footage from the scene, taken by Skypix Aerial Works Ltd, reveals the extent of the damage done by the fire. The aerial video shows a vast stretch of beach that has been burned black by the inferno.

Shared on Facebook, the video also reveals that the fire spread well beyond the beach. The full extent of the fire can be seen in the video below.

The Air Corps has also shared photographs of the scene, and revealed that they assisted the mission by dropping no less than 44,000 litres of water on the blaze.

Curracloe beach has a storied past, having been used as a location in Steven Speilberg’s classic World War 2 movie Saving Private Ryan.

The fire was a result of the consistent and unusually high temperatures that Ireland has experienced in the past month. A high fire risk warning will remain in effect at least until Wednesday this week.
