Drone registration figures in Ireland show that the robots are truly taking over

Enough to block out the sun…

Okay, Ireland doesn’t have quite enough drones to block out the sun (yet), but a fair few drones have been registered in Ireland since registration became mandatory in December 2015.

The Department of Transport confirmed today that 1,200 drones have been registered in Ireland as part of the Small Unmanned Aircraft (Drones) and Rockets Order (statutory instrument) S.I. 563 regulation of 2015.

Transport Minister Paschal Donohue said: ‘Drone use is increasing exponentially in Ireland and nearly 1,200 have already been successfully registered with the IAA. The new register will help to safely integrate these small aircraft into the broader aviation system. The potential application for drones is truly incredible and the development of the drone industry in Ireland will have a very positive effect on the wider economy’.

You can register your drone here, but you must be 16 or older. You have until the end of January to complete the registration for free, after which time it will cost you a fiver.
