Dublin Bus fare change

Some people will pay more…

People who currently pay the €2.15 fare for Dublin Bus will have to pay more under the new BusConnects scheme, as a new flat fare looks set to be introduced.

A new flat fare, between the two most commonly used fares €2.15 and €2.60, is being introduced.

The fare, likely to be around the €2.30 mark, will mean that those paying a €2.60 fare now (for journeys over 13 stops) will save money, while the €2.15 fare (for 6-13 stops) will pay slightly more.

There were 59 million journeys recorded for €2.15 fares and upwards in 2017 according to the National Transport Authority.

A total of 41% were for the €2.15 fare, with the remainder for the €2.60 Leap Card fare, cash fares and journeys on more than one bus.

“If you get on a bus at the moment and your journey requires you to use two modes of transport, you have to pay two fares,” an NTA spokesperson told JOE.

Under the proposal, the flat fare will allow you to travel on any Dublin Bus, Luas or train in Dublin for a 90 minute period after the ticket has been purchased.

The fare will not be introduced until 2020 along with other changes on the BusConnects scheme in an attempt to provide a greater and more frequent service.
