Today (21 July), Dublin City Council is enacting a plan to pedestrianise College Green. The move is a trial run to test out proposals for a pedestrian plaza outside Trinity College.
Currently, the College Green area is a choke point for cars, Dublins Bus, Luas, and cyclists – as well as pedestrian footfall.
As a result of today’s closure, some bus stops will be out of service and diversions will be in effect on the following dates between 07.00 and 19.00.
Dublin Bus have provided a list of routes affected. Of buses that travel up George’s St: Route 9, Route 14, Route 15, 15a and 15b, Route 16, Route 65b, Route 68a, Route 83, Route 122 and Route 140 are all affected.
Of buses that travel up Patrick’s St: Route 27, Route 49, Route 54a, Route 56a, Route 77a and 77x, Route 150 and Route 151 are affected.
Four buses that travel up James St are also affected, these are: Route 13, Route 40, Route 123 and Route 747.

Green Party councillor Neasa Hourigane has raised issues with today’s pedestrianisation of College Green, noting the presence of many metal barriers and Gardaí. The barriers ringfence much of the road, meaning that pedestrians are still restrained to walking down the footpaths.

Yesterday, climate protestors were joined by cycling and pedestrian activism groups in shutting down Dublin’s South William Street until 7pm, in unofficial direct action designed to encourage further pedestrianisation of Dublin city centre.
