It looks like thousands of commuters could be badly affected as the bus strike threatens to rumble on into the working week

Given that it’s a Bank Holiday, most people have yet to feel the full extent of the bus strike, although there’s no doubting that thousands have already been seriously put out by it. However, it looks like it could get much worse for all commuters, as the unions representing the workers at Dublin Bus have stated that no approach for fresh talks has been made, meaning that the strike looks set to continue into the working week.

According to The Independent the strike could also spread to Irish Rail, after Dermot O’Leary, Assistant General Secretary for the National Bus & Railworkers’ Union stated that they will not stand idly by while their colleagues in Dublin Bus are on strike.

The strikes have started as a result of the Dublin Bus workers resisting cost-saving measures being implemented by the company, which would affect their rates of rest pay and overtime pay on the back of recommendations by the Labour Court.

It’s estimated that nearly 400,000 people could be affected if the strike continues into tomorrow, and that number would surely grow even further if Irish Rail also get on board with the industrial action.
