This would brighten up the city.

A proposal to Dublin City Council, backed by Fine Gael councillor Noel Rock, would see Dublin City replace some of its zebra crossings with rainbow crossings.

The rainbow crossings would celebrate the massive strides made by Ireland’s LGBT community in the past two decades, culminating in May’s Marriage Equality referendum.

The proposal suggests that these crossings should be permanently installed at three Dublin City Centre locations:

  • George’s St/Dame St junction: Dublin’s unofficial gay district, home to Ireland’s iconic The George pub and one-time location of Joe Caslin’s incredible murial, depicted above.
  • Parliament St/Dame St junction: On the day after the referendum, many gathered in Dublin Castle to hear the results read out before spilling onto Dame St to celebrate.
  • Capel St/Grand St Great Junction: The location of Panti Bar, the gay-bar owned by Panti Bliss, an inspirator of LGBTQ rights and well-known drag queen. Panti has already tweeted her support for the proposal.

The crossings would represent a commemoration of Ireland’s historic Yes vote and send a message of support members of the LGBTQ community who live in or visit Dublin.
