Dublin, Galway and Belfast will have protests against the criminalisation of women taking abortion pills in Northern Ireland

Carl Kinsella

“We condemn the arrest and prosecution of a 21 year old woman in County Down who has been accused of using poison to procure abortion.”

This is the message of the #NotACriminal movement, which will hold protests in Dublin, Galway and Belfast tonight.

A Co. Down woman appeared in court last week, accused of using prescription medications Mifepristone and Misoprostol in order to induce an abortion. These drugs are legal in the rest of the United Kingdom, and are categorised by the World Health Organisation as ‘essential drugs’.

The law which the woman is accused of breaking dates back to 1861.

The Dublin protest will take place outside the GPO, beginning at 6pm this evening. The Belfast protest begins at 5:30pm and will start outside Belfast City Hall. The Galway protest begins at 6pm outside the Galway Courthouse.
