Dublin monument to those who died in Ireland’s Mother and Baby centres engulfed by flames

Carl Kinsella

A wall of remembrance for the children who died in Ireland’s Mother and Baby centres has been engulfed by fire in Temple Bar on Sunday evening.

Photos from the scene show a significant fire burning on the wall, which is covered in photos of children who were labelled illegitimate by the state after being born outside of wedlock.

The installation is named “Somebody’s Child” and it has been part of Dublin’s buzzing Temple Bar area since late 2015.

Councillor Mannix Flynn has spoken to TheJournal.ie and said it looks like the fire was intentionally started: “This is a memorial site for children who didn’t get the opportunity to live.  It was targeted. That’s what it looks like here.”

The Gardaí have not confirmed whether they are treating this fire as a criminal incident.
