A parish priest in Dublin has voluntarily stood aside from his position due to an investigation into historical allegations.

An official statement released on Sunday from the Archdiocese of Dublin confirms that the unnamed priest has stepped aside in line with Catholic Church policy on safeguarding children.

The statement notes that “concerns” were brought directly to the diocese and subsequently reported to An Garda Síochána.

The information relates to several decades ago and is not connected to the priest’s work in his current parish.

“Standing aside does not imply the truth or falsehood of what is being investigated,” notes the statement.

The priest in question has stepped aside from his duties in order to allow for an “appropriate investigation” by relevant Church and State authorities to take place.

The diocese statement concludes by urging anyone who may have concerns or information regarding the safety of children to contact the Child Safeguarding and Protection Service of the Diocese on 01 8360314.
