Always nice to be recognised for performance, right?

Ireland is one of the priciest places in the world for cannabis, according to a new report.

The 2018 Cannabis Price Index ranks Dublin as the 6th most expensive city in the world in which to buy the drug, while Tokyo takes the top spot.

Compiled over December and January by Tel Aviv-based cultivator device company Seedo, the report lists the going rate for cannabis in 120 cities across the globe, with Dublin averaging out at a little over €17 per gram.

Belfast, meanwhile, takes 14th place in the league table, at around €12.72 per gram.

Across the pond, London is the most expensive city in the UK for the drug, at €7.35 per gram.

By contrast, Quito in Ecuador is the cheapest place in the whole world for marijuana, averaging at €1.08 per gram.

The study also estimates the potential tax that each city would yield if cannabis was legalised, noting that Ireland would yield €77.8 million in taxes based on consumption rates in Dublin, in line with the current tax on cigarettes.

Furthermore, the highly variable cost of the drug in cities around the globe indicates that prices don’t necessarily decrease with increased consumption, or even legality.
