Leo Varadkar accused of “poor manners” by DUP MP

Carl Kinsella

Taoiseach

DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson has slammed Leo Varadkar for visiting Northern Ireland today without informing any “local representative.”

Varadkar met with the EU’s Chief Negotiator for Brexit Michael Barnier in Dundalk today for an All Island Dialogue conference. The Taoiseach then travelled north to visit certain areas in Northern Ireland.

Donaldson, the MP for Lagan Valley, has lambasted this decision by the Fine Gael leader, saying that “none of the other normal protocol was followed,” in terms of a typical Taoiseach’s visit to Northern Ireland.

He began his statement by saying that “Leo Varadkar’s visit is another demonstration of the poor manners and disrespect which appears to be the Irish Government’s Brexit strategy.”

Varadkar specified at today’s All Island Dialogue meeting that he has “no interest in a land grab” in Northern Ireland, but Donaldson went on to accuse the Taoiseach of using Brexit to “undermine Northern Ireland and particularly its constitutional position.”
