Yesterday we brought you the news that sticking slices of bread on cats was the latest craze to sweep the Internet. So to commemorate the occasion here’s five of the strangest fads to make their way onto the web.

Gone are the days when cameras were used to take family photos around the fireplace. Nowadays all they’re used for is taking photos of your mates in precarious positions so you can post them onto Facebook and enjoy 15 seconds of fame. With that in mind, here are five of the strangest fads to make their way onto the web.

Breading

It’s the most recent fad to hit the web (as we told you yesterday) and it’s quickly stacking up as the strangest. It might sound as though there’s a lot of work involved in this fad but believe us, there’s not. It’s as simple as making a hole in a slice of bread and then poking your cat’s head through said hole… well, not just your cat, any old cat will do.

The fun part about breading is that it doesn’t become as stale as the other fads. This is because once you’ve taken a photo of your cat with his head poking through a slice of Brennans batch bread you can move onto pan, wholemeal, multi-grain etc. The fun is pretty much endless.

Tebowing

To understand Tebowing you must first understand Tim Tebow. He plays American football for the Denver Broncos and he loves God. Like, really loves God. With that said, Tebowing is the act of bending down on one knee and resting your head on your fist in a prayer like stance.

Tebowing rose to fame after Tebow managed to take the Broncos to an overtime victory against the Miami Dolphins on October 23, 2011. After which he bent down for a prayer and to thank the Big Guy. A fan mimicked the pose on Facebook and from here the strange workings of the Internet turned it into one the biggest crazes of last year.

Horsemanning

Horsemanning is one of the more interesting and impressive fads to have engulfed the Internet, but only when it’s done right. The act of horsemanning was apparently a popular way to pose back in the 1920’s and was done so as a joke to make it look like the Headless Horseman got a hold of you. But during 2011 the pose had somewhat of a revival and with it, some of the best photos on the net were created and easily the best fad ever was re-discovered.

Batmanning

Batmanning was probably the least popular of the Internet fads but it certainly wasn’t the least impressive. The act consists of someone hanging by their feet off the side of a ledge (or any high point for that matter) as they mimic Batman.

Sadly, the fad never caught as much ground as other Internet fads but for anyone who participated: well done you.

Planking

You can never beat the original, and planking is the original Internet fad. The origins of the fad are a bit murky as some claim that Tom Green invented the ‘game’ as far back as 1994 while others suggest that it wasn’t until 2000 before it actually became a ‘fad’.

The action consists of lying down face first with your arms held rigidly against your body, so you form the shape of a plank of wood. The fad gained massive popularity when celebrities the world over began tweeting photos of themselves in the stiff position. In Australia they called planking “extreme lying down” which is actually the best way of describing it.
