After Eight

A very sweet Yes vote.

After 66.4% of the country voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment, there were jubilant scenes at Dublin Castle as the Taoiseach and number of Irish politicians were joined by members of the public.

During the press conference that announced the result, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said that “I said in recent days that this was a once in a generation vote. Today I believe we have voted for the next generation. To those who voted No I know today is not welcome … I would like to reassure you that Ireland will still be the same country today as it was before, just a little more tolerant, open and respectful.”

Granted, the severity of this issue is not lost on any Irish citizen, regardless of the way they voted, but after hearing that the Eighth Amendment will be repealed, a lady named Saundra Stephen started to share some After Eight chocolates with those in attendance.

For some, the decision to repeal the eighth represents a a very sweet outcome of the referendum.
